Debates about the tryanny of the right or left hide the fact that democracy depends on consensus. Arguments put in these terms pit Americans against another. The the only way to move the country in any direction is to recognize that the fate of all of us depends on considering the good of each of us. If Americans can work together in the interests of all, they will have passed the Mussolini test, proving democracy possible.
